Our top Mykonos travel tips to help you plan your visit
Mykonos continues to attract visitors who return year after year to this charming island. This is mainly due to offering the perfect combination of warm weather, stunning beaches and a buzzing cosmopolitan atmosphere.
If you’re planning a visit to the island for the first time, you may have many questions on what to do, how to get around the island and more. This is why we have put together our top Mykonos travel tips to help you plan out your visit and ensure you make the most of everything this beautiful island has to offer.
-
Explore the streets of Mykonos Old Town on foot
There are several different modes of transport to get around and explore different parts of the island. When Mykonos Town was declared an architectural landmark by the Greek government, they also prohibited any motorised traffic on the streets. So, the best way to explore the narrow cobbled streets of Mykonos Town is on foot.
When staying at The TownHouse Mykonos, our boutique hotel is located right in the heart of the old town, which means there is plenty to discover on your doorstep. However, if you’d like to visit any of the beaches or restaurants located on other parts of the island, our VIP Concierge can help arrange a private car or taxi for you.
-
Visit the charming area of Little Venice
Little Venice is a beautiful area of the island not to be missed. As the name suggests, it has colourful two-story Venetian-style buildings with wooden balconies that resemble Venice in Italy. This is due to the fact that in the 13th century, Mykonos was under Venetian rule.
The area now houses trendy bars and restaurants that overlook the dazzling Aegean Sea, making it the perfect photo opportunity. Known as one of the most romantic spots on the island, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a drink or dinner at sunset.
-
Be mindful of the Meltemi winds
Mykonos has a Mediterranean climate with mild, rainy winters and warm, sunny summers. If you’re after the warmer weather, the best time to go to Mykonos would be between June and August when temperatures can hit 27 degrees.
However, something to be mindful of before visiting is the famous northern Meltemi wind that locals refer to as a natural “air-conditioner.” So, even in the warm summer period, it is worth bringing some jumpers to avoid catching a chill in the evenings.
-
Head to a rooftop bar for sunset
There are many great spots to enjoy the island’s spectacular sunsets, including the various beaches, Mykonos Town Harbour and the famous Windmills. However, one of the most spectacular ways to experience views of Mykonos and the Aegean Sea at sunset is from one of the island’ panoramic bars.
At The TownHouse Mykonos, we have our very own 54 Cocktail Bar & Sunset Lounge where guests can enjoy the beautiful view with a delicious cocktail or champagne flute in hand. The perfect way to start off (or end) your evening in style!
-
Indulge in some retail therapy
Whilst Mykonos is a great place to enjoy nightlife and the many golden beaches, it also has some excellent shopping. If you’re after high-end designers like Gucci and Balenciaga, then Nammos Shopping Village is a great place to find them all in one luxury shopping paradise.
Shopping in Mykonos Town is also a wonderland to find more unique luxury boutiques and trendy stores. Known as the retail and nightlife hub of the island, Matoyianni Street is filled with designer stores and handmade jewellery shops. Soho-Soho is one of the most famous designer stores that can count celebrities like Tom Hanks and Sarah Jessica Parker to their clients. So be sure to leave space in your luggage for all your shopping!
