The best places to watch the sunset in Mykonos
When visiting Mykonos, there are plenty of beautiful sights to see, including the historic windmills...
The TownHouse, formerly a neo-classical aristocratic home, is one of the oldest buildings in Mykonos Town. The hotel is set in Manto Mavrogenous Square named after the Greek heroine who became the only woman to be honoured with the title of ‘General-in-Chief’. She devoted her entire personal fortune to support the struggle for Greek independence, a decision that pitted her against her own family.
Thankfully, today things are a little more relaxed. The stylish Townhouse Hotel is situated in an enviable and highly privileged position within the vibrant, colourful harbour. Assuming you don’t get wonderfully lost amidst the labyrinth of whitewashed streets Little Venice and the island’s iconic windmills, this is the perfect spot to explore the ancient settlement. For those secret Shirley Valentine fans among you, the building we now occupy featured as the backdrop for the film’s market scene.
The TownHouse is conveniently located only 250 metres from the entrance to the Chora Old Town, where our airport transfers will drop you off (cars are not permitted in the town during the tourist season) and one of our porters will meet you to bring your luggage. The town is a pedestrian-only area and living within it adds an authenticity that can be missed in many of the larger beach resorts.
If you do hire a car, there is a free car park is located just 500 metres walk from the property. Parking in Mykonos can be difficult during high season so having this close to the property can be a huge plus.
Mykonos itself is a small island, so any distance can be easily covered. With beaches and destinations such as Scorpios, Alemagou, Principote, Blue Marlin, Jack O Beach, Paradise and others can be reached within 10 to 15 minutes. Shirley Valentine’s infamous beach (and rock) are located at Agios Ioannis around 15 minutes’ drive away.
Travelling by car from one side of the island to the other should take no more than half an hour. The hotel’s Concierge is on standby to assist you with any plans including car, boat or charter rentals. Delos (the birth place of Apollo) and Rhenia island can be easily reached by boat from the harbour.
On Fabrica Square, guests will find the main bus terminus from where you can reach any of the main beaches. This is just 750 metres away from the hotel, or 10 minutes on foot.
Mykonos Airport as well as the New Port (if you’re island hopping) is just 3 kilometres away and can be reached by car or taxi in just 10 minutes. The main island taxi rank is also just 100 metres away from the hotel.
The TownHouse is truly a hidden gem in the heart of the picturesque, cosmopolitan and residential old town. Simply perfect for those who wish to enjoy a real flavour of life in Mykonos while enjoying every possibly luxury and levels of personal service characteristic of a luxury boutique.
In Little Venice, rows of 2 and 3 storey medieval houses with tiny basement doors and wooden balconies reach out over the sea line and waterfront.
Unique, beautiful and reminiscent of a colourful past when pirates roamed the old town, these historic properties, once owned by rich local merchants or captains have become an iconic and beloved landmark of Mykonos for tourists and locals alike.
Now of course, there are bars, restaurants, cafes, shops, and art galleries – but none of that charm or romance has been lost.
Little Venice is just 500 metres away from the hotel or a 5-minute walk away.
Mykonos Town ‘Chora’ and its whitewashed buildings are the epicentre of day to day Mykonian residential life – the perfect spot to immerse yourself during your stay. You will probably get wonderfully lost amidst the winding maze of narrow cobbled streets designed to protect the town from the ravages of pirates.
Appealing to an eclectic mix of jet set clients Chora offers a huge range shops, restaurants, bars, clubs, historic churches and iconic sights.
The TownHouse Hotel is located in the town square (known as Manto Square) equidistant to the entrance of the Chora and heart of the harbour, it is the perfect place to enjoy your time in this little slice of paradise.
Nothing epitomises Mykonos Town like its windmills.
The famous Kato Mili stand proudly in a row overlooking the sea, built by the Venetians 500 years ago to harness the strong sea winds to grind flour. Their spindly arms and straw-capped bodies are one of the most iconic and historic sights of the island.
Today the windmills are used as unique homes as well as a small museum. From this vantage point almost all of Mykonos Town is visible.
Kato Mili are only 700 metres from the hotel, or around 10 minutes by foot.
